Hey all-
I used to play this game a long time ago on an XP laptop. I basically had a case of landlubber disease and needed to head back out on the open sea to do some plunderin' on me Vista laptop. Thar game loaded fine (and fast) and I can get past thar 2 opening screens, the one where our hero opens the chest o' gold and the 2K splash page. The Pirates game splash screen than appears, the DVD drive fires up, and just as I'm about to go into the game I get the following error message (which I copied/pasted below). I have read the other Vista problems. I have Avast Pro anti-virus (have that turned off), I've tried running thar game through My Computer--> pirates.exe and tried that in "Administrator" mode. How do I try it in WinXP mode?

Do I need the 1.02c patch? I have Diablo 2 and Neverwinter Nights (2 games much much older than Pirates) and they run fine on my Vista laptop. This LandLubber needs help gettin' back out on the SEA!!!

I hope revealing this information will not assist a hacker in fraking with my system. Gettin' Pirates to work is worth the risk!

Well, this is one that I've never seen before. Hmm.

The fact that you ask about 1.02c suggests that you haven't installed it. The c patch deals with a number of tech upgrades that occurred post-SMP. So the first thing to try is to install a fresh 1.02c patch. Here's an available source:

It was the patch! The game loads and plays well. Sometimes, the swordfighting slows a bit, but it's really nothing. Still a great game after all these years! I wish Sid Meier and the company would update this baby. Not really an overhaul, just new villains, new dances, etc.

thanks cap'n ;)
