Hello! I love Sid Mier's Pirates! I've found that no other pirate game can shine a light on it. However, one thing that completely bugs me in every way is the speed of a battle. Or rather, the speed of it's end. I play on apprentice. I love fighting the battles, but I don't really like challenges unless I'm up for it. Usually though, I just like to kick the ever living crap out of someone. On apprentice mode, though, I find that the wind is ALWAYS blowing in only one direction. I'm not particularly sure, but I think it's always blowing to the east. Let's say that, that is correct and does always blow to the east. During a battle, after I've blasted the crap out of a ship. My large War Galleon always has trouble sailing over to the wreckage to take it over. They always seem to have the west side of the screen, and I have to sail at 0-2 knots over to them, which usually is a 5 minute process... if I'm lucky. Other times, 10-15 minutes to get over to them.

Ultimately, I would like to know... Is there a way, that I can have my ship sail at a constant rate? It would be preferred for a rate of 7-10 knots. But whatever that can be done. If it's not at least 5 though, then never mind. Anysort of information on this matter would be apprciated. Thank you.

Part of the lower Difficulty level is that the number of variables is reduced. At higher Difficulty you get variable wind directions, and then ultimately wind changes during the battle.

Overall, on the big map, wind is generally blowing from East to West. (This sort of corresponds to the "trade winds" which hit the bulge of Brazil and then follows upward along the Caribbean coast. It accounts why the traditional trade triangles go from Europe to Africa, Africa to the Gulf of Mexico, and then the Gulf Back to Europe. The whole pattern is reinforced by the Gulf Stream current that generally follows the same path.)

Historical note: For the period, anything faster than 8 knots was considered "moving at a good clip". It wasn't until the Clipper ships (that _always_ move at a good clip) that ships moved consistently at double-digit sailing speeds. For this era, average ship speeds were closer to 4-6 knots, with smaller vessels like pinnaces and sloops able to zip around at 7-8 knots. (Stormy weather could move the ships faster, but usually at the cost of structural damage.)

BTW, galleons in general are lumbering buses at sea. It's like putting sails on a log: the ships weren't designed for speed. They were either meant to carry LOTS of cargo, or LOTS of soldiers. (The latter makes for better boarding engagements. The trouble is getting close enough to board.) If you want speed and maneuverability, go for frigates.

Although, I agree on using a smaller ship would in fact make my ability to move during battle increase exponentially, that's not why my topic is in the mod area. I was actually hoping someone could suggest somewhere to get a mod to change my speed during battles, or change it overall. I noticed the trainers have certain mods. The super trainer has mods that give a speed boost, but I heard that it doesn't really work all that well. So, I think maybe I wasn't totally clear.

Revised question: Is there a mod, or a trainer that works... that can allow my ship, regardless of what it is, sail at a constant rate at approximately 5-8 knots?

I rather am glad people tend to respond to topics on this forum. However, I don't want to nitpick... but what exactly does the "Ship of the line", or a Royal Sloop have to do with a flag galleon, and a mod that would be able to allow it to sail at a constant rate? At the present state, I sail a Flag Galleon and a Treasure Galleon. The last game I played, I could take a Ship of the Line head on with a War Galleon. With a Flag Galleon on my side, I can take a Ship of the Line, should I meet one. Royal Sloops have nothing on me. But enough of that, this topic isn't about wether a Royal Sloop can beat a Ship of the Line or not.

Anyone else know knot mods?

Well, I'm none too familiar with mods in general (as I don't use any), but if you want to sift through what's out there, you might check with Hook on Pirates: http://www.hookedonpirates.com/
They have a database of over 250 mods.

Keep in mind that SMP is a rather old video game (measured in game years). Not exactly too many people still tinkering with it. What mods that already exist for SMP can be found either here at Addicted to Pirates, or at Hooked on Pirates. If you can't find what you're looking for in either place it probably doesn't exist, and the likelihood that there's a modder still active willing to put in the effort to create a new mod that is precisely what you want is practically nil.

I see... That is actually quite a valid point. Thank you for your time. Seeing as this was my last resort... I've already checked the mods on both sites. My last ditch effort was asking on the forums. That's really too bad... Ah well... Despite it's slowness, I still prefer the Flag Galleon.

Welcome to Pirates! Sometimes when my ship slows down and I want to board an enemy ship, I try to use a zig-zag pattern to get to the ship. Your ship will pick up more speed if you sail at an angle to the wind instead of sailing straight into the wind. You can also get tighter turns if you reef your sails. I hope this helps.

If you are still looking my trainer among many other things allows you to increase the speed of your ship, make it at minimum do x knots (# configurable by you) both in battle and in world. They can be toggled on and off by hotkey as well. You can get my trainer on this site or http://hosted.filefront.com/phalzyr

Make sure to read the readme file and turn off any default features you don't want on.
