News by KriFos

GameInformer has posted a video of Atari's presentation of the XBOX version of Sid Meier's Pirates!

You'll see the start of the game (shortened down I believe), some sailing around... And then it REALLY starts to get interesting!

Suddenly, the game restarts, and they choose the multiplayer features. Ship vs Ship battles! They start to choose from a list of ships. These are the new ships that I can confirm:

Brigantine
Coastal Barque
Fluyt

We also see the Tartane, but we already knew about that. The ships also has different stats. Firepower, Defense, Speed and Turning, which seems to vary from 1 to 5 pirate flags, where 5 is best.

So, they choose a battle between a Fluyt and the Tartane. The Fluyt, being a Square Rigged ship, doesn't stand much chance against the Tartane, which outmanouvers it quickly. When the Fluyt starts to sink, you'll see lots of tiny crew jumping overboard - and then you hear laughter amongst the viewers :) Pretty funny!

The Tartane ship also grabs a power-up in the end after the battle, which upgrades it's attack.

Well, you should view the whole presentation yourself, go here!

Thanks for the news!

And it is good news, I think! :D

There is obviously a feature that allows you to boost the speed of your ship, or not to boost it, this means that ships actually can sail slowly in the game. :D :D

Keep in mind this is the xbox-version we are seeing, though it shouldn't differ too much from the PC-version I hope.

Keep in mind, Xbox is a console, meant for short attention spans, so you must keep the goodies coming (power ups)..

I sincerly hope we don't get junk like that on the PC version.

Think of most of the ports from PC to Console....didn't most of them include some new toys for the kids?? Sim City comes to mind real quick...

Yeah, true - but i think Civrules was thinking of that you can adjust the speed at which you are sailing at with some type of control.

Anyways, I hope the "upgrading" of ships will be quite different than just some powerups floating in the seas...

Yes, I know it is the XBox version, but the ship speed will not be something that is going to be different.

Well, I wasn't speaking of the Speed, per se, but the power ups, and keeping interest in a game on a console.

As far as speed of ships go, wasn't there an option of half mast and full mast sails, especially while in battle??? I think they were called Battle Sails???

Also, Sorry, but I can't see the video yet, still at work..sniff, sniff...

Yeah, we had Battle Sails and Full sails in the old version :) - Maybe they've come up with a new way to adjust the speed?

TBH, I have no idea how they adjusted speed in the old days, exept for the wind and the direction of the sails... :P

These "upgrades" are something i've feared from day one. The maximum speed of a ship depended on the design of it's hull, so upgrades would be silly. however, they might of added an upgrade like navigation experince, meaning you gain saling experience helping you harness the elements more effectively.

We also must remember that the sailing screen is a map, and is not supposed to be a real world representation, just a pretty looking guide to the world around your ship.
